fast the devil

every great man must fast the devil,
his stomach and hungry heart
and each is paid the visit
his deceiver na'er depart

if Christ breath within him
and recline in summer shade
then sweat and swelter and shaking stick
this lumbering brother forbade

"who is eldest? who is keen?
and who hath ventured from the tent?"

"but whoa ye slithering wanderer,
now your feet are spent"

a man cannot be
both heart and cock
in the end he decides:
to slither
or walk
